How to reduce school clutter?

I bring home books every day, and while I am working on art projects I have my supplies out. So, I have a room, which is a small space, and there are books, papers, and art supplies cluttered everywhere. They get on the floor, bed, on the desks, etc.

I would like to know how to keep this clutter to the minimum. The reason it’s an issue is because I want it ready and convenient to use whenever I intend to go to work.

So, I have an old-fashioned scroll desk, 2 dressers, a closet, an art desk, and a small filing cabinet. The desk and cabinet are already almost completely filled with certain supplies. Anyone know a way to keep my area clean and convenient?

Why will a compass change direction when moved along a metal object like a filing cabinet, from top to bottom?

A question was posed to me after a demonstration in which a compass was held at the top of a filing cabinet and when the compass moved down the cabinet, the needle changed directions completely. I know it has something to do with magnetic fields but, why would such a small distance make such a big difference? Thanks,
